Hello Joanna--Everyone! I recall one momentous reading I attempted for myself back in 2003. It was for a professional position I really wanted. The Celtic Cross reading where I asked about the consequences of taking this job were very negative. Remember though, I wanted this and that desire overwelmed the inner caution (it could not even get a word out!). In the end it was bad and if I had more sense to be objective, might have made a different decision or been able to make strategic alterations to change the outcome. So what I want is to know how to retain objectivenss so I can look at a negative read and look at it objectively so I can get to a win/win if possible--or at least find a way to let go of a desired outcome. With this group--what an outstanding resouce for a reading--or even a 2nd opinion on one! Bright Blessings, Fireshadow |

One thing that works for me is to pretend I am doing the reading for someone else!
And/or to get a second opinion, as you say. Or to have someone else read for you. Looking forward to hearing what other people have to say! |

One thing that works for me is to pretend I am doing the reading for someone else! Wow, that is a creative idea--immediately necessitating setting aside the invested idea/plan and looking at it from the outside for a few minutes while working with the cards. Have any of you others worked with this? |

What to do to be objective about a "negative" self-reading...
First--I think that asking the right question from the start and choosing an appropriate spread helps....If I really want to take a job; and am just consulting the tarot to make me feel good about the choice--doesn't work well for me. What I usually do is to have two readings simultaneously--on the left what I need to know about this job that could be challenging for me; and on the right what are the benefits of this job. IN the middle I let the deck choose a single card that sums up the life lesson that will come from the new job. This works for other decisions as well. You could choose to pull cards in the middle until you get a major; or use a minor if it turns up. I usually us a NSEW spread of the direction on either side; with a Major in the middle. If I get caught with a negative reading--I can keep the card in the spread that seems the signficator, shuffle and do the spread above as a secondary, clarifying reading. I pay particular attention to the cards that are repeats from the first spread. I think readers get caught up in one reading and forget that the cards are willing to clarify--just use another simple spread to clarify the confusing cards. And remember that often our best learned lessons come from what appears to be a bad situation at the time. If we truly knew what was ahead for us we would often choose to miss some of the most important memories and lessons in our life. Any challenge can be turned into an opportunity, a lesson for the future. DragonSong |
